Hope in the Darkness
Week 2 of National Suicide Prevention Month
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” — John 1:5
Darkness can feel overwhelming. Depression, anxiety, and despair often whisper that there is no way forward, no reason to hope. But scripture reminds us of a greater truth: the darkness cannot overcome the light of Christ.
This week, as part of National Suicide Prevention Month, our theme is Hope in the Darkness. Together with Beyond the 12 and Jesus & a Cup of Joe, we’re leaning into the promise that no matter how heavy the night feels, God’s light still shines.
When Darkness Feels Heavy
Mental health struggles can make the world seem shadowed and hopeless. But the Bible is filled with reminders that even in the darkest valleys, we are not abandoned:
“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.” — Psalm 23:4
“The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?” — Psalm 27:1
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” — John 1:5
These verses aren’t just comforting words; they are lifelines of truth. They remind us that God’s presence pierces the darkness, bringing hope where despair once lived.
Stories of Light Breaking Through (Representative Scenarios)
A young man battling depression finds strength when a friend texts him John 1:5 and reminds him to call 988 for immediate support. That message is the encouragement he needs to seek help.
A mother struggling with grief attends a small group Bible study, where someone shares Psalm 23:4. She realizes she isn’t walking alone and begins to open up to her community.
A teenager overwhelmed by bullying prays with her youth leader. Hearing Jeremiah 29:11 gives her the courage to choose life and hope.
These scenarios reflect the truth: one verse, one conversation, one prayer can make all the difference.
Practical Steps for This Week
🌟 Share the Light: Post John 1:5 on your social media with the caption: “No matter how dark it feels, Jesus is the light that overcomes all things.”
☕ Be Present: Invite someone for coffee and listen. Sometimes presence is more powerful than words.
🙏 Pray for the Hurting: Dedicate a time of prayer this week for those in your community who feel lost in the dark.
📞 Point to Help: Remind others that the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7 by call or text.
A Call to Action
Jesus said in John 8:12: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
This week, let’s be carriers of that light. Let’s remind each other that no darkness is too great for God’s love to overcome. Share the light. Share the hope. Share the number 988.
✨ Next week (Sept. 15–19), join us for Week 3: “The Power of Prayer,” where we’ll focus on interceding for those who are struggling and lifting up our communities in prayer.
